Nxtra by Airtel Boosts Renewable Energy Use by 41 Percent
Nxtra Data Limited (Nxtra by Airtel), the data center subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, has reported increased use of renewable energy in its operations, rising to 220,541 MWh, a 41 percent increase compared to the previous year. Despite a 25 percent increase in power consumption, the company achieved a 4 percent reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions compared to FY21, Nxtra by Airtel said while unveiling its second edition of the sustainability report for FY 2023-24. This equates to 163,408 tCO2e reduction in emissions over the course of the year.

Progress in Diversity and Gender Inclusivity

The sustainability report highlights Nxtra's focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) parameters. Nxtra has also made progress in diversity, increasing the representation of women in its workforce by 30 percent. To further its commitment to gender diversity, the company launched the NxtWave initiative, which aims to double the number of women in engineering roles by FY26, the company said.

Unveiling the sustainability report for FY 2023-24 Nxtra by Airtel said, "The future of data centers lies in our ability to harmonise intelligent infrastructure with sustainability. Integrating innovative ESG initiatives into our business model and operations has been integral to our data center build and operations from day one. As our sustainability report highlights, we have made consistent progress across all three sustainability parameters—environmental, social, and governance—during the year and will continue to keep this as our core focus area."

Safety and Local Sourcing

Safety and sustainability remain top priorities, with 4.3 million safe man-hours recorded in construction and 99 percent of procurement sourced locally.

Future Expansion and Sustainability Goals

Under the guiding principle "Intelligent by Design and Sustainable by Choice," Nxtra aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2031.

Nxtra claims to operate India's largest network of 12 large and over 120 edge data centers and is focused on sustainable growth through investments in clean energy, water management, and waste management. In the next three years, Nxtra will launch multiple new hyperscale data centers across key metro cities and will increase the existing capacity by 2X to over 400 MW.
