State-run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) said it has deployed Tata Communication's Wi-Fi+ and Wi-Fi cloud communication solution, giving its subscribers seamless access to 44 million Wi-Fi hotspots in more than 100 countries including international flights and rail systems. Wi-fi+ allows BSNL subscribers access to the single largest global Wi-Fi network in the world while travelling outside India.

Typically accessing Wi-fi hotspots is very cumbersome and requires the user to remember multiple passwords, the telco said, adding that with Wi-fi+, its users will have to register just once to automatically connect to the closest participating Wi-Fi hotspot, even if they travel to a different city, country or continent.

“BSNL is the first among the Indian Mobile operators to have taken this big step forward towards how mobile subscribers use Wi-fi internationally. It removes the friction from accessing Wi-Fi and makes it simple to use Wi-Fi data,” said Anupam Shrivastava, Chairman and Managing Director, BSNL.

“BSNL mobile subscribers can access Wi-fi anywhere in the world without worrying about the bill shock when they get home and no longer have to limit their internet usage while abroad," he added.

BSNL has 94.36 million mobile subscribers and 13.88 million wireline customers.

“Wi-Fi+ changes how subscribers experience Wi-Fi and simplifies how they get connected to the internet and use their applications while travelling abroad. We are really proud of this partnership with BSNL and how it is delivering innovative mobile experiences to BSNL subscribers.” said Christopher Almeida, Sr. Vice President, Service Provider Group at Tata Communications.
