Vodafone educates retailers to prevent sim related frauds

Vodafone India, this week conducted a unique programme ‘Ek Mulakaat’ for its retailers in Delhi & NCR circle. This first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at educating retailers on the correct documentation process and its importance in curbing SIM card frauds.

The event was inaugurated by Shri Ram Narain Sr DDG (TERM) DoT. Senior officials from Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Telecom Enforcement and Resource Monitoring Cell (TERM), Police Department and Vodafone distributors attended the event.

As a responsible corporate, Vodafone understands the need to engage with and educate retailers on the importance of following subscriber verification process, as prescribed by DoT. Through ‘Ek Mulakaat’, Vodafone communicated with retailers on measures to combat the persistent menace of fake SIM cards and connections. Sh Ram Narain, Senior DDG (TERM), DoT, Sh N K Chhoker DDG -TERM Cell Delhi, Sh Ashok Saroha, ACP Operations, South East Delhi, addressed the gathering highlighting the responsibilities of telecom retailers towards society and the nation.

The officials stressed upon the importance of establishing the identity of subscribers through proper documentation, before selling SIM card/connection, to curb misuse by anti-social elements. Sr.DDG DoT also heard the problems being faced by retailers to implement guidelines issued by DoT on subscriber verification. Shri Ram Narain apprised that retailer is not only selling the SIM cards but also acts as a front line soldier. He raised the attention towards the misuse of the SIMs for communication between anti-social elements, miscreants and terrorists. Many times financial frauds also being done with the help of SIMs taken on fake and forged documents

Commenting on the initiative, Apoorva Mehrotra, Business Head – Delhi & NCR, Vodafone India said, “Vodafone is a responsible telecom service provider and is vigilant in practicing mandatory guidelines that safeguard the interests and security of our subscribers. Subscriber verification is in the larger interest of national security and we understand the need for regularly engaging with our retailers, and reiterating the need for following the laid by process. Vodafone ‘Ek Mulakaat’ has been an attempt along these lines.”
