Chunghwa Telecom Inks Extension Agreement for 5G Network Modernisation in Taiwan
Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) and Nokia announced on Monday a one-year extension agreement to modernise the telco's 5G network across central and southern Taiwan, bolstering performance, capacity, and energy efficiency in preparation for the 5G-Advanced era. The deployment, currently underway, is expected to conclude in twelve months, the statement said.

Infrastructure Upgrades with AirScale Portfolio

Under this partnership, Nokia will upgrade CHT's infrastructure using its AirScale portfolio, which includes baseband, Massive MIMO radios, and Remote Radio Head products.

The deployment will feature Nokia's MIMO Habrok radios in both 32 TRX (Habrok 32) and 64 TRX (Habrok 64), designed to cover all use cases and deployment scenarios, as well as the AirScale Pandion portfolio, all powered by ReefShark System-on-Chip technology.

Additionally, Nokia also said it will provide services, including digital deployment, optimisation, and technical support.

AI-Powered Solutions for Network Efficiency

CHT will utilise Nokia's AI-powered MantaRay solutions for optimised network management and energy efficiency. This includes the MantaRay SON platform, which enables automated network optimisation, as well as innovations like deep sleep mode and MIMO muting to significantly reduce radio network power usage. To handle increased traffic demands, Nokia will deploy its 7250 interconnect router, enhancing network scalability and performance as part of the deal.

Chunghwa Telecom said: "CHT continues to evolve its 5G network to deliver best-in-class connectivity experiences to its customers and maintain our market-leading position in Taiwan. This new improved deal with our technology partner, Nokia, will prepare our network for the 5G-Advanced era with higher performance, AI-powered intelligence, and lower energy consumption."

Long-Term Partnership

This expanded deal will help Chunghwa Telecom enhance its network performance and capacity. The agreement will see Nokia continue its long-term vendor partnership with CHT, which has been in place since the deployment of 2G networks through to the 5G era, according to the official release.
