5G Use Cases in Public Transport

The demonstration follows a May 2024 memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the three partners and showcases a proof-of-concept trial of 5G use cases such as in-vehicle 5G public Wi-Fi connectivity, real-time remote vehicle monitoring, and journey log collection.

Future trials will explore the integration of the autonomous bus with smart city infrastructure, as well as 5G remote driving in emergencies, the official release said.

"Once commercialised, these use cases, including in-vehicle CCTV and real-time telemetry data monitoring, will make autonomous bus rides safer and more reliable for passengers while improving cost efficiency for bus operators," DNB said in a statement this week.

Benefits of Autonomous Transport

Commenting on the demo, the Minister of Transport said, "The benefits of autonomous transport range from improved traffic flow to route optimisation, leading to smoother traffic patterns, more efficient use of road infrastructure, and reduced human error. There is also potential for greater energy efficiency and environmental benefits, especially when electric vehicles are used, as they reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution in urban areas."

DNB's Chief Strategy Officer added, "It enables real-time, reliable connectivity for data processing, mapping, and integration with other systems, which play vital roles in shaping the future of transportation."

"5G also facilitates improved communication between vehicles and infrastructure such as traffic signals, road signs, and centralised traffic management systems. Through 5G-enabled CCTV and real-time systems monitoring by the command center, bus passengers can enjoy peace of mind, knowing their safety is enhanced."
