Latin American sustainable data centre operator, Scala Data Centers, announced this week its entry into Mexico with its first data centre project. Scala Data Centers' first facility in Mexico, named SMEXTP01, is set to be established in Tepotzotlan, supported by an initial investment of around USD 80 million. According to Scala, this move aims not only to enhance Scala's footprint but also to cater to the growing demand from large cloud and content providers in the region.

Scala Data Centers Mexico Facility
The HyperEdge data centre, SMEXTP01, will have a critical capacity of 7.9 MW, with 5 MW slated for availability in the initial phase. The facility is located in the municipality of Tepotzotlan, about 25 miles from the country's capital in Mexico City (CDMX). According to Scala, this development aligns seamlessly with its strategy to enable new markets in Latin America for Hyperscale providers.
Scheduled for opening in the fourth quarter of 2023, SMEXTP01 is already anchored by a large Hyperscale client, said Scala. The facility spans 142,133 square feet (approximately 13.2 thousand square meters), emphasizing the importance of customization, modularity, and environmental sustainability.
Scala says in line with its commitment to green practices, the data centre will be powered by 100 percent renewable and certified energy sources.
"This new project underscores our commitment to enabling new markets in Latin America, either in unexplored locations or in regions with data centre presence, but still lacking a dedicated approach to large IT capacities that truly serve the Hyperscale segment," said Scala.

Mexican Data Centre Market
Scala highlights that Mexico stands as the second-largest data centre and cloud market in Latin America, with robust growth rates of approximately 22 percent and 25 percent per year, respectively.
Mexico's connectivity infrastructure, including 11 submarine cables linking it to the United States and the rest of the Americas, further solidifies its stature. Notably, Mexico, alongside Chile, is one of the select nations in the region with a direct submarine cable connection to the Asian market.
Tepotzotlan Advantages
The Tepotzotlan city locale strategically combines several favourable factors, including energy availability, connectivity, and proximity to a sizable consumer market, thus making it an ideal hub for critical IT infrastructure, particularly within the Hyperscale domain, said Scala.

Latin American Expansion
Scala Data Centers said it is actively advancing its expansion plans, with the construction of multiple new sites such as the Tambore Campus in Sao Paulo, Brazil; Porto Alegre city in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil; Lampa in Chile; and upcoming projects in Fortaleza city in Brazil, as well as Mexico and Colombia.
Scala said, since its inception in 2020, the company has invested over BRL 8 billion (approximately USD 1.6 billion) in projects across Latin America. The company's expects to reach 500 MW of distributed capacity within the next five years across the four countries it operates in.

Scala further added that in 2023 alone, the company started operating three state-of-the-art data centres in Latin America, contributing to over 20 MW of IT capacity, located in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), (13.2 MW of IT), Tambore (Brazil) with 6 MW of IT and Curauma (Chile) offering 5 MW of IT.
