After seeing an exponential growth in the number of video chats that happened over Messenger between 2016 and 2017, social networking giant Facebook has decided to extend the video chat functionality to the Messenger Lite version of the app which is only 10MB in size. Reportedly the number of video chats that happened on messenger alone stood at 17billion in 2017 which is 2x the growth compared to the numbers last year.

This urged the company to provide the update to Lite users who had been missing out on the video chat functionality if they ever wanted to. This has been a long-awaited update given that Lite previously included almost all prominent features from the main Messenger app.

The rich, expressive Video Chat has been becoming fairly popular owing to the increased number of apps which allow the users to communicate on video like Google Duo, and Messenger itself.

Facebook wanted their Lite users to use the maximum capability of the app, which resulted in this update. Also, an interesting feature allows the users to transition from a voice call to video call just by the tap of an icon. Facebook is slowly pushing this update slowly to every platform, and it must be available to every Lite user pretty soon.

Facebook released the Messenger Lite application keeping countries such as India in mind where the subscriber base in high but the internet speeds are slow. And the application was an instant hit, and almost all the entry-level smartphone users are downloading the application and using it on a daily basis. Since the launch, the Messenger Lite application has been downloaded 100 million times and racing towards 1 billion downloads on Google Play Store.
