Micromax, the country's second largest smartphone and tablet vendor has finally started manufacturing smartphones in India. Until now, it used to import all of its devices from Chinese white-label manufacturers. From now on, some of the Micromax smartphones will be manufactured in its Rudraprayag facility in Uttarakhand.
The said facility was already being used to manufacture tablets and LED TVs. “Micromax has manufacturing plant in Rudraprayag where it manufactures LED and tablets. The company started manufacturing mobile phones couple of months back,” said a Micromax spokesperson to PTI. All the tablets sold in the country by Micromax are manufactured at this facility but the smartphone production is still in its start-up phases.
Once in complete flow, you can expect the prices of the devices manufactured in the country to come down considerably due to removal of import duties. And with the prices coming down, the market share is bound to see an increase. Micromax had a market share of 13 percent in Q3 2013 in the entire mobile market and had a share of 16 percent in the same period in the smartphone segment which was led by Samsung. Of all the 4.14 million tablet PCs sold in India, Micromax acquired 8.9 percent of market share as per calendar year 2013. Micromax experienced its revenue double to $1 billion (about Rs 6,000 crore) by the end of fiscal year of 2013-14 ended against Rs 3,168 crore during the fiscal year of 2012-2013.
