For years, internet service providers have been raising the costs of broadband internet service due to what they call “increasing demand for service.” Both fixed and mobile internet providers recently claimed that increasing demand is leading to “ballooning” costs, which made price increases necessary. They even went as far to say that companies such as the BBC should be helping to foot the bill.
All of this was brought to a halt by a study from Plum Consulting. The study, which was paid for by Yahoo, Skype, BBC and others, discovered the the cost of data is only a small fraction of the operating costs of an internet service provider. The study showed that each gigabyte of data cost approximately €0.01-0.03 to the provider. It is even claimed that 4G technologies will significantly reduce these already low costs in the near future.
On a smartphone, €10 per gigabyte is about the norm. This is a healthy profit when the data you are paying €10 for only cost the provider €.01-.03.
This statement was released by Plum Consulting after the survey: “Traffic-related costs are a small percentage of the total connectivity revenue, and despite traffic growth, this percentage is expected to stay constant or decline.”
Of course there are still operating expenses such as maintaining the lines, employing a workforce, and paying for other business expenses such as office space and utilities. Until now, however, ISPs maintained that their biggest cost came from the increasing demand for data service.
It seems that the internet service providers may have their hands caught in the cookie jar – or your wallet – this time.

i just hope, infotel dont fool us like others

Yes RIL Infotel is a private player which runs for PROFITS but NOT SUPER PROFITS like others (Read: Airtel and Vodafone). What ever people have said earlier and are wanting is reasonably priced tariffs for wireless broadband in lieu with the costs, NOT just cheap tariffs! There is a difference between the two, i.e if you can understand and want to understand!
Arun October 12, 2011 at 1:33 pm
I don’t get why you guys expect much from Infotel.
Infotel is just another private player which runs for PROFITS.

Mukesh is a very Good Businessman…
The liked the Way he thinks..
If Reliance applied for BWA and 4G the competition would have be great..
but instead He Told some company to apply for the tender and That company acquired the Pan INDIA license at a Very low Cost .. Compared to all the 3G wale Log..
And Then He Bought the company.. He saved a lot of money there..
So now that money can be used to provide a better and cheap service bcoz The 3G competitor will need a higher margin to breakeven while as reliance Infotel Will need a lower margin to breakeven…
So byE Bye 3G and welcome to 4G at a cheaper rate…
This is what i like abt him..
Playing with the law (Its how great businessman a made)…

Arun October 12, 2011 at 8:07 am
Is it just LTE based high speed broadband service or voice AND data service, similar to 3G? As I understand, no specific standards have been finalised yet for voice calls in a 4G network. Could somebody please clarify? Thanks in advance.

@ajay
3g was never meant to be a replacement for broadband with just 5mhz of spectrum 4g/bwa is for broadband with 20mhz and a technology like lte it could be a hit instantly …
ramesh October 11, 2011 at 9:29 pm
