SpaceX, Elon Musk owned space exploration and tech company, is offering free router to customers. This is not entirely a free router, but it is actually a free upgrade. So this means that it is not for new customers at all. It will be for customers who have been the early users of the company's services. Starlink had an early rollout of services in 2020, and is now offering a free router upgrade to those customers who got the service in 2020 and are still users. This router upgrade is necessary for the customers as the company will soon stop sending out software updates for the Gen 1 router. The Gen 2 routers were introduced by SpaceX in 2021 with a flat dish.

The new generation router would be necessary for customers keeping in mind network security, performance, and long-term reliability. Note that the older generation routers won't stop working out of the blue. However, they will not get the new software updates. This means that there will be older generation security on these routers which increase exposure to vulnurabilities, and the posibility of reduced compatibility as the Starlink network evovles.

There's support for Wi-Fi 6 and dual-band Wi-Fi on this newer router and it also allows users to add-on more units later to expand the coverage. All of this is something the Gen 1 router doesn't support. This was published by the brand on its support page quietly on the website last month. Now, even the customers are being notified of the same by the company.
