Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (Indosat or IOH) has established extensive microwave backbone transmission networks across Indonesia in collaboration with ZTE, addressing the nation’s geographical challenges through advanced microwave technology. This partnership leverages ZTE’s iFlexiTrunk Microwave Backbone Technology to bridge the digital divide, delivering high-speed communication, including 4G networks, to remote islands and rural areas.

Expanding Connectivity to the Underserved
With over 17,000 islands and rugged terrain, Indonesia faces significant challenges in establishing traditional wired communication infrastructure. To address this, Indosat and ZTE have deployed more than 550 ultra-capacity microwave links, now covering 80 percent of major cities and remote regions. According to Indosat, this deployment is enabling communities to transition from “non-connected” to “connected,” unlocking new opportunities for millions.
Advanced Technology Tailored for Indonesia
Indosat explained that ZTE’s solutions, such as multi-frequency Ultra Broadband Antennas (UBA) and energy-efficient 4T4R Modem boards, are specifically designed to withstand harsh weather conditions and reduce operational costs. The scalable system supports capacity expansion by up to eight times, ensuring future-proof connectivity.

Driving Economic and Social Progress
According to the official release, this initiative has significantly increased backhaul capacities in areas like Sumatra and Kalimantan to 2-3 Gbps, with peaks reaching 6 Gbps. This boost in connectivity has improved Indosat’s subscriber numbers. Indosat highlighted that access to online education, healthcare, and entertainment will drive economic growth through job creation, tourism, and knowledge sharing.
