Reliance Jio's 5G Stack is a Testament to Design and Make in India: Report
Reliance Jio’s homegrown 5G stack demonstrates the strengths of “design in India” and “make in India,” Shyam P Mardikar, President and Group Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Mobility at Reliance Jio Infocomm, said on Friday. He delivered a technology address at the first edition of the ETTelecom Industries Innovation Summit 2024, according to an ET report.

Rapid Network Expansion and User Adoption

Mardikar emphasised the telecom operator’s achievements in developing a proprietary 5G stack, which includes its own intellectual property in 5G radios, AI/ML platforms, cloud orchestration, and cloud infrastructure deployment, as well as cloud-native probing solutions for radio and core networks.

“Like Bell Labs, we are trying to cultivate capabilities at Jio Labs. In fact, the concepts of ‘design in India,’ ‘create in India,’ ‘make in India,’ and ‘deliver in India’ are best exemplified by this (Jio 5G stack),” the report quoted the CTO as saying.

Its in-house subscription engine and marketplace products are expected to enable a software-as-a-service (SaaS) consumption model, according to a presentation made at the event, the report said.

Mardikar revealed that Jio has rapidly expanded its 5G network to over 100 million unique users in 12 months by combining digital twin technology with AI and ML. The network now covers nearly 90 percent of the Indian population, building on Jio’s earlier success in rolling out 4G.

“In just 12 months (since October 2022), because of this digital twin and digital design concept, we were able to light up a million 5G cells, covering nearly 90 percent of the Indian population,” Mardikar said, according to the report.
