AirTrunk Opens AI-Ready 150 MW Data Centre in Malaysia
Asia Pacific hyperscale data center company AirTrunk has commenced operations in Malaysia, following the official opening of its flagship 150 MW data center in Johor Bahru, named AirTrunk JHB1. Spanning over 10.3 hectares, JHB1 is strategically located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula in Johor Bahru.

Opening of AirTrunk JHB1

The company held an official opening event attended by Malaysian and Australian government officials and key AirTrunk partners. The development was completed in over 4 million work hours with no major safety incidents, AirTrunk said in a statement this week.

According to the company, the data center offers strong domestic and international connections to regional technology hubs, including neighboring Singapore, with an end-to-end cross-border connection strategy.

Featuring a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.15, the new facility includes an AI-ready design with AirTrunk’s first deployment of direct-to-chip liquid cooling technology alongside traditional indirect evaporative cooling (IEC) and high-density racks, reducing energy consumption by up to 23 percent.

Partnerships and Green Energy Commitments

In support of sustainability, AirTrunk has partnered with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) to integrate JHB1 into Malaysia's energy grid. This collaboration follows a 2023 memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at promoting energy transition in the region, the company said.

Additionally, AirTrunk has secured a 30 MW Virtual Power Purchase Agreement with developer ib vogt under Malaysia's Corporate Green Power Programme and has equipped JHB1 with a solar-ready roof capable of generating over 1 MW of power. This makes it one of the largest onsite solar deployments for a data center in Southeast Asia.

Malaysia’s Cloud and AI Ecosystem

AirTrunk said: "The rapid and safe delivery of JHB1 is a pivotal step in the adoption of AI in Malaysia and AirTrunk's growth as a trusted partner for our customers in the APJ region."

"The new data center supports the rapid growth of cloud and AI in Malaysia and aligns with the MADANI Government's initiative to establish AI hubs in the country. We are making a long-term commitment to further engage with the local community to build a full AI ecosystem in Malaysia. The long-term and predictable demand from JHB1 also provides stability to underpin investment in the energy grid and initiate multiple green energy developments," AirTrunk Malaysia added.
