CityFibre Launches True Gig Service to Enable Easier Advertising for ISP Partners

UK-based wholesale full-fibre broadband provider, CityFibre, has announced the launch of a new service called ‘True Gig.’ This service offers 1.2 Gbps download speeds, enabling its Internet Service Provider (ISP) partners to advertise full 1 Gbps speed services. According to CityFibre, the ‘True Gig’ service is designed to address the challenges ISPs face when promoting ‘Gigabit speed’ broadband services to consumers. ISPs are prohibited from advertising a service as a 1 Gbps offering unless they can prove 50 percent of their customers actually get 1 Gbps on average at peak times.

Overcoming Gigabit Speed Hurdles

CityFibre explained that the bandwidth overhead necessary for ISPs to run and monitor a service often requires a typical 1 Gbps wholesale service to be advertised to consumers at slower speeds, usually around 900 Mbps.

With the increased wholesale speed of 1.2 Gbps, CityFibre is enabling its ISP partners to offer their customers a full 1 Gbps service, assuming that their backhaul arrangements and in-premises equipment also support these speeds.

Furthermore, the wholesale fibre broadband provider said the new wholesale broadband product is available at the same price as its existing 1 Gbps wholesale product, making it accessible to a wider range of customers.

Symmetrical Speeds on XGS-PON Network

According to the official release, the 1.2 Gbps product will offer symmetrical download and upload speeds when delivered over CityFibre’s XGS-PON network. In areas where the network has not yet been upgraded to XGS-PON from GPON, the company provides a variant with 1 Gbps upload speeds as an interim solution.
