Google rolled out three new photo apps as part of company’s new series of “appsperiments.” The apps some of which are available on both Android and iOS allow Google to test new features and assess user response regarding the same. The apps Storyboard, Selfissimo and Scrubbies, are first instalments of photography apps Google plans to launch that is built on its experimental technology.
The appsperiments program makes use of technologies now in development at Google that rely on object recognition, stylisation algorithms, and efficient image encoding and decoding technologies.
Google announced the new program is in part inspired by its Motion Stills app. The app converts short videos into cinema graphs and time-lapse videos to be sent as shareable videos. Google launched Motion Stills as an update to improve iOS Live Videos.
Here’s what the three photo apps can do:
Storyboard
The first is Storyboard an art-inspired photo effects app similar to the popular Prisma app. You get to upload video and restyle them into a single page comic book layout. The app selects interesting frames from the video and lets you select one of the six visual styles to save as a comic. Storyboard is an Android-only app for now.
Selfissimo
Selfissmo is specifically designed for selfies as the name implies. The app is an automated selfie shooter which takes black and white photos every time you pose. Whenever you stop, a photograph is taken. This one is available for both Android and iOS.
Scrubbies
The third one, Scrubbies is an iOS-only app designed for videos. With the app, you get to change the speed and direction of video playback and create loops of a video. You literally scrub the screen to remix the videos like a DJ.
Google said these apps are the first in many of upcoming apps, so it’s likely we will be seeing more of such photo apps in the future.
