In what turns out to be a surprising event, Xiaomi has confirmed that the four-year old Xiaomi Mi 2/2S smartphones will receive the MIUI 9 update, slated to release on July 26. Yesterday, Xiaomi's CEO Lei Jun revealed that there are five million people who're still using the Mi 2/2S smartphones across the globe, which is an astounding number for four-year-old smartphones.
That said, the MIUI 9 update be based on Android Nougat, so both the phones will release Android Nougat update on top of all the MIUI 9 features. This news broke out from the official MIUI English forums page. At the moment, Xiaomi is looking for beta testers for its upcoming operating system, the MIUI 9.
Along with the Mi 2 and 2S, Xiaomi also revealed the smartphones which are going to receive the MIUI 9 update. Here are the smartphones scheduled to get the MIUI 9 Chinese ROM.
Xiaomi Mi 6, Mi 5s Plus, Mi 5s, Mi 5c, Mi 5, Mi 4S, Mi 4c, Mi 4, Mi 3, Mi 2/2S, Mi MIX, Mi Max 2, Mi Max, Mi Note 2, Mi Note/Pro, Mi Pad 2, Mi Pad 1, Redmi Note 4X (MTK), Redmi Note 4X (SD), Redmi Note 4, Redmi Note 3 (MTK), Redmi Note 3 (SD), Redmi Note 2, Redmi Note, Redmi Pro, Redmi 4X, Redmi 4A, Redmi 4, Redmi 4 Prime, Redmi 3S/Prime, Redmi 3, Redmi 2A, Redmi 2/Prime, Redmi 1S, Redmi 1.
Although the list is for Chinese MIUI 9 supported device, the global ROM smartphones may not differ, and all the smartphones might get the global MIUI 9 build as well, but it will take some weeks for Xiaomi to release the update though.
The update will roll out for the recently released devices such as the Xiaomi Mi 6, Mi Max 2, and Redmi Note 4X. Other high-end devices such as the Mi Mix 2, Mi Note 2, and Mi 5s Plus will receive the update in the coming weeks.
Also, the Xiaomi Mi 5X slated to release on July 26 will be the first Xiaomi smartphone to come preloaded with MIUI 9. The MIUI 9 is said to be a massive overhaul compared to the MIUI 8 with features such as split screen mode, quick reply, advanced doze mode, etc.
