As per the latest data revealed by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Bharti Airtel, at 8.43Mbps, records highest average download speed on a mobile network for January 2017. It is worth mentioning that Airtel’s average mobile data speed nearly doubled to 8.42Mbps from 4.68Mbps. Also, it is the third time in the past five months (since September) when Airtel topped the TRAI’s average download speed report.
Reliance Jio’s average download speed, on the other hand, has reduced to 8.34Mbps from 18.14Mbps peak speed it recorded in December last year. Clearly, Jio’s last month’s average download speed is diminished by more than half of what it registered in December.
Other networks like Vodafone and Idea have witnessed an increase in download speed in January in comparison to speed in December. Vodafone recorded and average download speed of 6.8Mbps (from 6.7Mbps), and Idea registered 6.62Mbps which is a modest improvement from 5Mbps.
BSNL, the state-run network’s average download speed, on the other hand, decreased to 3.16Mbps in January from 3.42Mbps in December.
TRAI makes use of the MySpeed app to collect the download speeds of various networks from mobile data subscribers in the country and calculate the average download speeds on real time basis.

Airtel’s 4G download speeds have also topped a Credit Suisse report published in February recording close to 12Mbps based on its study conducted across over 30 cities.
“Jio, Vodafone, and Idea are close to each other (7-8Mbps). We suspect Jio’s speeds are impacted by the high load on the network in the free offer period. Jio carries over 90% of all data traffic in the country currently while we believe their network capacity share is closer to 35%” the report said.
