5G Combined with GenAI to Transform Industries, Says TCS: Report
Generative AI, along with 5G technology, has the potential to completely transform industries. Gen AI is definitely a buzzword these days. While people often use it in ways that may or may not actually align with its true meaning, there are clear use cases where it can have a significant impact, especially in telecom," said a senior executive from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), according to an ET report.

Generative AI in Network Management and Security

"In the realm of network management, Gen AI could play a critical role in predicting data flow patterns and optimising performance, ultimately improving the customer experience. Similarly, in the area of security, Gen AI could be pivotal in identifying and predicting threats before they occur, strengthening overall network security," the report cited Mayank Gupta, Global Head (Sales and Strategy Network Solutions and Services) at TCS, as saying.

Moreover, in data-heavy sectors like crypto and blockchain, AI will be crucial for managing and processing this information, positioning it as a key player in these technologies.

5G Monetisation Challenges

When asked about the 5G monetisation challenges, he reportedly mentioned that one of the main challenges has been fully understanding the business case or use case required by the industry.

"It is not the traditional ‘design, deploy and get paid’ model. Instead, you have to engage with the industry, collaborate with various stakeholders and take an ecosystem approach. It is essential to understand the specific business needs, define the problem and then build solutions around that," Gupta said, according to the report.

"And once the solution is deployed, it should be tied to revenue the industry generates, rather than following a conventional business model. Essentially, it needs to be an outcome-based model, where the industry doesn't have to invest in capital expenditures upfront, but can instead implement use cases in a way that's self-sustaining and driven by the results," the executive added, the report further said.

Global 5G Adoption

Talking about the 5G adoption, he reportedly said that it is happening in stages. "Two years ago, it was moving at a very slow pace, but it has gained significant momentum. Globally, the US and Canada are leading the way, while countries like Korea and Brazil are accelerating their adoption, largely due to the liberalization of their spectrum. From a deployment standpoint, mobile private networks are among the first areas seeing significant progress, with deployments growing rapidly."

It's not just about providing connectivity; it's about transforming operational technology. Industries are now focused on implementing 5G solutions that can help them reduce costs or drive revenue growth. "The focus is shifting from just connectivity to a broader transformation of operational technology," he reportedly added.

Industry-Specific 5G Implementations

Globally, the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands has already implemented 5G for container terminal automation. In the Middle East and Africa, the focus is heavily on oil and gas, while in Australia and Brazil, mining is a primary area of interest.

More than 50 percent of data is now coming from the enterprise sector, which has become a key focus. Different countries prioritise various use cases depending on their specific needs, the TCS executive reportedly said.

Consumer-related use cases are also gaining prominence, with consumers expected to drive significant data traffic and monetisation opportunities in the near future.
