Beware of Reliance Jio GigaFiber Phishing Mails Trying to Scam Money off Customers

Follow Us

Without a shred of doubt, there are millions of people in the line waiting for the launch of Reliance Jio GigaFiber in the country. Last year, when the Mukesh Ambani led telecom operator teased the new service, it also rolled out an interest form for the users to fill out to gauge the intensity of demand in the areas where it was to roll its services. Now we are near the commercial launch of GigaFiber, which is slated to happen next month. However, this good news there are also reports of some malicious emails and ill-intended happenings which might be trying to scam customers in the name of providing a potential Reliance Jio GigaFiber connection. Here is what we know about this until now, and also make sure you read till the end to stay safe.

What is Phishing?

To first understand how the scammers are trying to lure people into their trap, it is imperative to know what phishing is. Phishing is simply a word of the tech jargon, which implies impersonation. In phishing attempts, the hacker or the scammer tries to appear as a trustworthy source or website and then proceeds to take your bank information, passwords, private information or any other sensitive data. The scammers, in this case, seem to be impersonating as Reliance Jio representatives to trick the recipients of the mail into making payments.

Reliance Jio GigaFiber Phishing Mails from Scammers

As per some of the report on the incident, the emails received by some of the customers have a subject as “Gigafiber - Activation Request Received”. Inside the mail, there is a Jio Digital Life masthead. In the mail, there are also links provided with the direction to the consumer to follow the links to confirm their subscription along with plans and pricing. However, in case you have received a mail like this, we would recommend that you do not open it and click on any links.

It is also worth noting that the scammers have gone a mile ahead in their attempts and have replicated the message from Jio with appropriate fonts and graphics which Jio uses. This might give the illusion to the recipients that the email being sent to them is from an official source, Reliance Jio itself. However, on taking a closer look at the sender’s email, the users will be able to tell apart that the source of the email is not genuine.

Given the hype around Reliance Jio GigaFiber, and also the fact that the service is all set to be launched commercially next month in Reliance Industries’ 42nd AGM, the scammers might have seen the timing as the right opportunity to trick the customers interested in the service. So if you have received any such mail which looks suspicious, it would be best to report the mail as spam.
