BSNL tops in providing new wireless connections during Apr 2016: TRAI

According to the ‘April 2016 Telecom Subscription Data’ released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), BSNL has topped in the country for providing new wireless connections. BSNL has made a net addition of 11,39, 541, leaving behind the private operators during April 2016. Another state-run operator MTNL has made 11,591 net additions to the wireless subscriber base.

Considering the total subscription base for wireless broadband service in the country, BSNL stands at the fifth position with 10.58 million subscribers. Other top four service providers in April 2016 were Bharti Airtel (37.37million), Vodafone (28.11 million), Idea Cellular (23.23 million), and Reliance Communications (15.61 million).

Assam showed the highest growth rate in wireless subscribers during April 2016, whereas Haryana showed the maximum decline in the same.

In terms of wired broadband service, BSNL topped the chart with 9.91 million subscribers, followed by Airtel (1.76 million), MTNL (1.10million), Atria Convergence Technologies (0.96million), and YOU broadband (0.54 million).

In the total market share of broadband services (wired & wireless), BSNL has 13.56% share (4th position). Airtel leads this chart with an overall market share of 25.90%, followed by Vodafone with 18.61% and Idea with 15.38%. Reliance forms 10.42% and all other service providers together constitute 16.14%.

In wireline subscriber base, BSNL has the top market share of 58.10%, followed by Airtel (14.73%), MTNL (13.36%), Tata (6.90%), Reliance (4.68%), Quadrant (1.01%), Vodafone (0.38%), and Sistema (0.24%). BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU access service providers held 72.06% of the wireline market share.

The overall wirelines subscriber base has declined from 25.23 million (in March 2016) to 25.04 million (in April 2016). The share of urban and rural subscribers in total wireline subscribers was 83.10% and 16.90% respectively. The overall teledensity has also declined from 1.99 to 1.97 at the end of April 2016.

In the month of April 2016, a total of 4.91 million requests were received for mobile number portability (MNP).
