Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a state-run telecom operator, is launching BSNL Live TV service commercially soon. The service is currently in the testing phase in Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh circles. The company is calling it a "first in India". But there's already JioTV+ available for JioTV customers, so how is this first in India? Let us explain everything here.

BSNL Live TV Launch Timeline

BSNL is partnering with another company to launch the Live TV services. An official from this other company told TelecomTalk that once the Live TV commissioning happens in Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh, it will be launched in a phase-wise manner in the rest of the country. The service is only given to the BSNL FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) customers.

But how is this a first in India? Here's what the official explained.

"JioTV+ is completely on the HLS-based streaming, and they are giving the service to internet-based customers. The consumption of watching the channels is directly from the internet plan. In this case, it is not like that. You do not consume any date of your existing plan. So even if the internet is going down also, the TV channel streaming will work," explained the official.

"The service will not depend on any internet speed or the latency speed," the official added.

As for the integration of this service into commercial FTTH plans, BSNL is still considering those details.

The BSNL Live TV app will only be currently available for the Android TV platform. Along with the live TV channels, there will also be integration of VOD (video on demand) service in this. To login, users will just have to enter their registered mobile number in the login (the number through which FTTH connection is purchased) and then an OTP (one time password) will enable the user to login.
