Microsoft Halts the Rollout of Windows 10 October 2018 Update After Users Report Data Wiping Bug

Microsoft has paused the rollout of Windows 10 October 2018 update following reports from users facing data loss post the update. Since the last two days, a lot of people who updated their Windows 10 machines to latest October 2018 version are posting about the absence of some files from their system. Although Microsoft did not push the update to everyone, users can head over to the updates section to get it right away. Since it's one of the much-anticipated updates in recent times, it seems like users are pressing the "Windows Update" button to get it right away.

Microsoft Acknowledges the Issue

Several users have been posting about the update since the last few days and Microsoft is quick enough in acknowledging the issue. "We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating," the tech giant posted on its support page.

Furthermore, it stated that users who have manually downloaded the update have been advised to not "install it and wait until new media is available". Microsoft has also provided links for people to contact the company through.

"We will provide an update when we resume rolling out the Windows 10 October 2018 Update to customers," the post added.

Several Users Report Data Loss Post the October 2018 Update

Users installing the "Windows 10 October 2018" update have complained that the process wiped out their user profiles including documents and photos, the media reported. Since Microsoft has not started automatically pushing this latest update out, only people who visit "Windows Update" manually and check for updates are installing the latest software version, The Verge reported late on Friday.

An alarming number of users have taken to social media forums and Microsoft's own support website to complain about the serious issue. "Last night I updated Windows 10 and it all went smoothly, but then I find that all my files in Documents are deleted. This included many crucial documents and financial info," read a user-complaint on the Microsoft support page.

After its "Windows 10 April 2018" update, in September, the tech giant had announced a refreshed "Windows 10 October 2018 Update" with new features and enhancements for over 700 million devices running Windows 10. The update rolled out globally on October 2, after the company's Surface event in New York City.
