Trai Speed Test Data Shows Jio 4G Download Speeds are Going Down Every Passing Month

Reliance Jio topped Trai's monthly speed test reports almost every month during 2017, but since March 2018, the telco's download speeds saw a downfall, and the same is expected to continue in May 2018 as well. Trai has updated its MySpeed application test results on its portal recently, which shows that Jio's 4G download speeds have come down during April 2018, for the second straight month. The average download speed on Jio 4G network during April 2018 stood at 14.7 Mbps, down from 17.9 Mbps in March this year. While Jio still has download speeds higher than other telcos, the download speeds decrease has become a worry for the telco. Also, Trai has been working on improving the testing methodology of its MySpeed application, which could be another reason. During April 2018, Airtel secured second place with 9.2 Mbps average download speed on 4G network, followed by Idea Cellular with 7.4 Mbps and Vodafone with 7.1 Mbps.

Vodafone and Jio reported their download speeds decrease during April 2018, while Airtel and Idea Cellular saw their 4G download speeds increase. Airtel's speed is up by 0.4 Mbps to 9.2 Mbps from 8.8 Mbps in March 2018, while Idea' average download speed is increased by 0.7 Mbps from 6.7 Mbps to 7.4 Mbps during the same period.

For the unaware, the Trai data showed Jio achieved an average 4G speed of 25.6 Mbps in December 2017, while every other operator' speed was below 10 Mbps. This is something which will worry Jio to the core and the May 2018 report is expected to report even low download 4G speed.

Moving onto the upload speeds department, Idea Cellular leads the chart with 6.5 Mbps average speed. Airtel and Reliance Jio secured third and fourth places with 4 Mbps and 3.7 Mbps average upload speed on 4G network. Vodafone registered an average upload speed of 5.2 Mbps on 4G network.

In the 3G download speeds department, Airtel leads the chart with an average speed of 2.6 Mbps, closely followed by other operators such as Idea Cellular (2.5 Mbps), Vodafone (2.3 Mbps) and BSNL (2 Mbps).

Reliance Jio has been the leader for months now, according to Trai' MySpeed application. But other portals such as OpenSignal, Ookla have rated Airtel as the fastest operator in the country.
