Instagram is preparing to roll out a couple of new useful features to help users manage the content they prefer to see and the time they spend on the app. On Tuesday, the company announced they are adding an option to mute people from appearing in your feed. The feature will finally allow users to remove posts from their newsfeed without the person informing behind the account. In case you want to mute an account, then so can do so by clicking on the three dots in the upper right corner of a post and select either option: “Mute Posts” or “Mute Posts and Story”. You can also mute posts and stories by pressing and holding on a story in your tray, or directly from a profile.
You can still see the posts that were muted by visiting the user’s profile, and you can unmute them any time you want. But you will continue to receive notifications for photos that you were tagged in, even if that user is muted. The mute option also doesn’t apply to the Instagram direct messaging service.
Instagram said this feature would make the feed more personalised and confirmed there was user demand for it. “Mute can make your feed even more personalised to what matters to you,” said Instagram. “We've also heard it may be a useful tool for managing complex social dynamics,” the company added.
The feature will initially go live with a “small number” of iOS users and then rolled out to all Instagram accounts in the “coming weeks”.
In addition, Instagram is also testing a feature that informs the people when they have seen everything there is to see on their network. The new feature will show a simple message in the middle of the feed once you’ve seen all of the new posts in past 48 hours.
The notification will read: “You’re All Caught Up” along with the smaller subtitle, “You've seen all new posts from the past 48 hours”. The feature promotes the more responsible use of Instagram and is essential for users who spend a lot of time on the photo-sharing app as a warning to stop mindless scrolling.
Earlier this month, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom had confirmed that a “Usage Insights” feature is also being tested. This feature will offer statistics to inform people about the time they spend using the photo social network.
