The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) today stated that it would start Independent Drive Test (IDT) in Delhi service area, including Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurugram and Faridabad cities beginning mid-February. Trai is expected to complete the test by mid-March. It is also said that the IDT will be conducted for about 18 days covering networks of all telecom service providers (TSPs) in Delhi service area. During the test, Trai will measure Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for both voice and data services.

Trai is regularly monitoring the performance of telecom operators against the prescribed benchmarks of various Quality of Service (QoS) parameters laid by the authority. During the period of July 2017 to July 2018, Trai has a plan to conduct IDTs in 70 cities with the population over ten lakhs.

And so far, the regulator managed to conduct IDTs in more than 33 cities and out of which the regulator published the report of 16 cities, and the remaining 17 cities will be published very soon.

In the above planned 70 cities, Trai will conduct IDTs along national highways and railway routes. IDTs normally comprise a duration of 3 to 8 days, which is being divided between voice calling and data service testing.

In the voice service test, Trai will check network coverage, call setup success rate, drop call rate, block call rate, handover success rate and Rx Quality. And in the data service, the regulator will test the download & upload throughputs, web browsing delay and video streaming & latency.

The regulator has already conducted Independent Drive Test in popular cities such as Jodhpur, Amritsar, Goa, Pune, etc.
