Broadband Speeds in India Witnessed 76.9% Rise in 2017, While Mobile Data Speeds Up by 42.4%

In the digital era, internet speed matters the most. Well, thankfully India is improving a lot as per the new data as from Ookla, the company behind the popular internet speed test platform - speedtest.net. India ranked on top when it comes to improving its broadband download speeds among the most populous countries, as per Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index 2017.

India’s average fixed line speeds increased significantly with the annual growth of 76.9%, leaving behind the US and China. If population index is not considered, India ranks fifth below Peru and Ghana.

The stats present a similar growth story for mobile data bandwidth in India. The country grabbed the second spot in improving its mobile data speeds, with year-on-year improvement 42.4% bringing mean speeds to 8.80 Mbps. However, Pakistan surpassed India, showing a growth of 56.2 percent this year.

Earlier, Ookla released Speedtest Global Index for the month of November which placed India at the 76th position for fixed broadband speeds and 109th position for the speed of the mobile internet.

Overall, the world’s mobile internet speed increased more than 30% in 2017. The mean global speed registered at 20.28 Mbps with mobile downloads increasing 30% over last 12 months and mobile uploads increased 38.95. On the fixed broadband side, a global average speed increased 31.6% during the same period with a mean speed of 40.11 Mbps.

Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index uses data from the hundreds of millions of tests taken by real people using their SpeedTest service every month. The company compares internet speed data from around the world monthly. It has 7,021 servers globally, out of which 439 Speedtest servers are present in India. The comparisons in the report Speedtest Global Index 2017, are based on Speedtest data from November 2016-November 2017.

Internet speed in India has improved considerably since the launch of Reliance Jio’s 4G LTE service. Since then competition has increased in both mobile and broadband sector, bringing down the data rates while increasing internet speeds. The report predicts that an increasing internet demand will lead to further innovation across various mediums in the coming year.
