BSNL lost the highest number of wireline subscribers in June 2016- TRAI

According to data released by TRAI about telecom subscriber base in India at the end of June 2016, Wireline subscriber base declined from 24.88 million at the end of May 16 to 24.74 million at the end of Jun 16. Net reduction in the wireline subscriber base was 0.13 million at the monthly decline rate of 0.52%. The share of urban and rural subscribers in total wireline subscribers were 83.51% and 16.49% respectively at the end of Jun 16.

The Overall Wireline Tele-density declined from 1.95 in May 16 to 1.94 in Jun 16, with Urban Wireline Teledensity and Rural Wireline Teledensity being 5.20 and 0.47 respectively. BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU access service providers, held 71.47% of the wireline market share.

The graphical representations of access service provider-wise market shares in the wireline segment and net additions in wireline subscriber bases in the month of Jun 16 are given below.

Airtel added the most number of new wireline subscribers followed by Vodafone, Reliance Communications and Tata. Operators which suffered a net loss of wireline subscribers include BSNL which lost the most subscribers followed by MTNL, Quadrant and Sistema.

Broadband:

As per the reports, the number of broadband subscribers increased from 159.76 Million at the end of May 16 to 159.80 million at the end of Jun-16 with a monthly growth rate of 0.03%. Top five service providers constituted 84.38% market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of Jun-16. These service providers were Bharti Airtel (40.61 million), Vodafone (32.28 million), Idea Cellular (27.02 million), BSNL (20.56 million) and Reliance Communications (14.38 million).

While in wired broadband, five wired broadband service providers were BSNL (9.88 million), Bharti Airtel (1.82 million), MTNL (1.10 million), Atria Convergence Technologies (1.02 million) and YOU Broadband (0.56 million).

MNP:

In Jun-16, a total of 5.16 million requests were made for MNP. With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 219.27 million at the end of May-16 to 224.43 million at the end of Jun-16, since the implementation of MNP.

Teledensity:

The overall Teledensity in India increased from 83.14 at the end of May-16 to 83.20 at the end of Jun- 16. The Urban Teledensity increased from 152.34 to 153.22, and Rural Teledensity increased from 51.75 at the end of May-16 to 51.41 at the end of Jun-16. The shares of urban subscribers and rural subscribers at the end of Jun-16 were 57.20% and 42. 50% respectively.
