Ok so the day that Jio fanboys had been waiting for since years finally dawned today, 5th of September when the operator could finally be referred to as having commercially launched and open to all. Sure the operator had been opening its doors to the public one step after another, starting from the employees, followed by their family and friends, followed by the people buying LYF phones, followed by people buying smartphones of partner brands, then those buying the Jiofi 2 hotspot and now finally open to every person possessing a 4G enabled smartphone.

I visited the local reliance digital mini store in my area at around 11:50 AM hoping to see a crowd gathered outside all hoping to get their hands on a Jio sim with the free bundled welcome offer. To my surprise I saw that the store was not giving out any sim cards at the moment and was infact rationing them in batches of 50 sims a day starting today. The store attendant said that one needs to come in the morning at 11 AM the time of store opening and collect a token number with a pre mentioned appointment time when he needs to come with the required documents to collect the sim.

Right outside the store there were printouts glued to the glass with instructions on the procedure needed to be followed to get a sim card. One needs to download the My Jio app on a 4G enabled smartphone and then generate a barcode unique to that handset, he then needs to get a printout of the barcode and carry it to the store to get his token number. At the time of appointment one needs to carry a coloured printout of his Aadhar card and pan card along with the originals and 2 passport sized coloured photos. Those planning on porting their existing numbers to Jio need to additionally furnish a valid UPC code.

This the store attendant said was put in place to streamline the whole process in a coordinated fashion. Another notice outside the store read 'Please follow the rules, No arguments please'
