Telecom regulatory authority of India has launched its own speedtest app for android phones to keep a track of which operators are adhering to the guidelines of minimum data speeds laid down by TRAI. After the tightening of regulatory norms on quality of voice networks through drive tests and call drop monitoring this is the next step taken by the regulator to ensure the quality of data networks is also maintained up to the mark along with voice services.

The app called 'My speed'  has been launched by TRAI and it runs on Android phones running Jellybean and higher versions and is available through the mobile seva app store. The application will  send coverage, data speed and network information along with device and location of the customer to TRAI. This will help the telecom watchdog in creating a virtual network map of each operator and ensuring a uniform data access experience in all areas.

TRAI has defined minimum internet speed that should be delivered to consumers. However, consumers often complain of poor speed. The regulator during its drive test has also found that 3G customers of some operators were getting 2G internet speed most of the time in select cities. This initiative will bring respite to the helpless consumers being exploited by operators.

Let us know through your comments what you think of this initiative by TRAI and whether it will succeed in achieving its goal. Keep reading TT for the latest updates in the Indian telecom industry.
