BSNL the largest PSU has finally pulled the plug on the multimedia messaging system (MMS) platform which was never able to gain any traction in India.

MMS which seems to be the communication technology of the age of the Dinosaur, never caught on with the masses due to it being higher priced than traditional SMS and not being supported by all handsets. Back in the day when someone spent Rs.5 on an MMS the receiver would receive a link to the multimedia content which he would later need to load in his phone browser, which made it tedious and effectively defeated the whole purpose of sending the MMS.

With the advent of instant messengers like whatsapp, viber, hike, line, etc. now sending photos, videos, voice notes has become very convenient and platforms like MMS have become obsolete. BSNL has sent out notification SMS to its subscribers informing them that BSNL will no longer be supporting MMS and that subscribers can manually edit their APN settings and select BSNLNET for accessing mobile internet on their phones. We may soon witness a similar move by private operators as well.
