BSNL to revive its landline business in Tamil Nadu, enhanced landline services on offer

BSNL-logoFacing tough competition from private telecom service providers, now state-owned BSNL will try to bring new look into its landline business with instruments in Indian state Tamil Nadu. The company is all set to launch integrate features of smartphones in Tamil Nadu circles by end of this year.

"BSNL is planning to roll out Landline in 22 sites in Tamil Nadu telecom circle in the next couple of months," according to a report. "It can support services like IPTV, e-commerce, tele-education, web portals, interactive games, multimedia content and call centre services," a report said.




For this, process is going on to shift about 1.06 lakh landlines to the new system and installation. However, the testing work is nearing completion and state capital Chennai Telephones is also in the process of rolling out the service.

"BSNL has nearly 27.52 million phones or 64% market share, but it is a category with a monthly decline rate of almost 0.6%," report said. "The company is bringing in next generation network (NGN) internet protocol multimedia subsystem infrastructure to integrate in-demand features of smartphones with landlines and revive ailing landline services," it added.

"With increasing consumer preference for multimedia services, we decided to move to a packet-switching model from our earlier circuit-switching mode.," said chief general manager of Tamil Nadu circle of BSNL, G V Reddy.

He further added, "This will result in convergence of fixed line and mobile. The operations are nearing final acceptance testing stage and we are hopeful it will be rolled out as early as the next quarter".
