Now the most sought after feature in any smartphone is the support for VoLTE a.k.a. Voice over Long Term Evolution. As the full-form indicates, VoLTE is all about using the LTE network for the transmission of voice calls. It supports high-definition (HD) voice-calling.

Benefits of VoLTE

For a layman to understand, here are the benefits of VoLTE technology. The biggest benefit of VoLTE is the call quality. Delivering crystal clear voice calls (of HD quality) with better reduction of background noise offers a superior calling experience to the users. Besides, VoLTE calls connect faster than the traditional voice calls. While on call, users can still access high-speed internet connectivity on VoLTE.

Added to it, VoLTE makes it easier to offer Rich Communication Services (RCS), including video calling, file transfer, or even real-time language translating. In fact, these RCR services are already available for cellular data services via the third-party apps. VoLTE allows using these services directly from the phone's built-in dialer.

Above all, VoLTE services are said to offer enhanced battery life for the smartphones compared with using an over-the-top Voice over IP service such as Skype (Source: Signals Research Group).

What is VoLTE Technology ?

According to a paper written by the members of 4G Americas, VoLTE technology is evolving voice business towards an all-IP communications network. “This is achieved by evolving the installed base circuit switched core network towards an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) core network, which supports communication services like High Definition (HD) voice, video calling, Wi-Fi calling and RCS services. This is an end-to-end network infrastructure solution including IMS, Evolved Packet Core, LTE-Radio Access Network (RAN) and system integration services. ,” the paper stated. To elucidate in a simple way, the voice is passed over the LTE network in the same way as the data is transmitted as packets.

VoLTE Phones in India

By all means, VoLTE is the future of voice communication. Understanding the opportunity, the manufacturers are launching more and more devices with VoLTE support. If to recap, when Telecom Talk first published the list of VoLTE supported devices in December 2015, there were only 32 smartphones. The list grew to 138 by the time we revised the list recently. Now, we once again publish the latest renewed list with all smartphones with VoLTE support.

Around 32 VoLTE smartphones are from Reliance Jio. Samsung has launched around 36 VoLTE supported handsets in the market. Alcatel, Apple, Asus, BlackBerry, Celkon, Coolpad, Gionee, Huawei, iBall, Infocus, Intex, Karbon, Itel, Lava, LeEco, Lenovo, LG, Micromax, Motorola, NextBit, OnePlus, Onida, Oppo, Panasonic, Sansui, Smarton, Sony, Swipe, TCL, Videocon, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Xolo are the other companies that bring VoLTE devices to the market.
