MediaTek Reportedly Working on More Affordable 5G Chipsets for India
Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek is reportedly working to bring 'more affordable 5G chipsets' to its handset original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for launching smartphones in India, with a focus on rural and price-sensitive markets. The company, which powered around 64 percent of all 5G smartphones under Rs 30,000 in India in the first half of 2024, aims to democratise 5G technology with its Dimensity 6000 series, according to an ET report.

Push for Budget 5G Devices

The push for budget 5G devices has intensified this year, with competitors like Qualcomm launching the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 chipset, which powers Poco C75 5G, priced at Rs 7,999. Learn more about the device launch in the story linked above.

"We understand that India is a price-sensitive market and are working to offer even more affordable 5G experiences in the future. The next phase of growth is expected to come from the rural markets as technology becomes more accessible at the grassroots level," said Anku Jain, Managing Director (MD) of MediaTek India, as quoted in the report.

Enhanced Features at Affordable Prices

Jain also mentioned that MediaTek is evolving with a focus on delivering enhanced features at affordable prices, aligning with the growing technological savvy of consumers who increasingly use their smartphones for activities like payments, gaming, and shopping.

"MediaTek has become a key player in the democratisation of 5G technology in the budget segment," Jain stated, adding that "the company offers chipsets under the Dimensity 6000 series for this category," according to the report.

Serving India's Smartphone Category

"Our engineers have worked diligently to optimise the power consumption of various components, such as the 5G modem, in our SoCs, ensuring that users enjoy excellent performance and extended battery life," Jain reportedly added.

"As India's smartphone mass market category will continue to grow, driven by better connectivity and network, MediaTek already has chipsets that power phones priced around Rs 10,000," the MediaTek executive noted.
