AI (artificial intelligence) has been the buzzword for 2023. Tech companies have started integrating AI into their products and solutions. Qualcomm Technologies has done just that with the announcement of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, its latest mobile platform. It will power the flagship smartphones of 2024 from OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) such as OnePlus, ASUS, iQOO, Honor, Nubia, OPPO, Redmi, Realme, Sony, Vivo, Xiaomi, ZTE, RedMagic, and NIO.

Qualcomm has focused on bringing AI capabilities to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to enable OEMs to integrate their AI solutions/software so that the end user can be delivered a great experience.

"Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 infuses high-performance AI across the entire system to deliver premium-level performance and extraordinary experiences to consumers. This platform unlocks a new era of generative AI enabling users to generate unique content, help with productivity, and other breakthrough use cases," said Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager of mobile handsets, at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

In the camera department, Qualcomm has used the Qualcomm Spectra, which is the company's leading Cognitive ISP, which produces AI-enhanced photos and videos in real-time for exquisite quality in any environment.

For AI, Qualcomm said, "Our leading AI Engine is the world’s first to support generative AI models with up to 10 billion parameters — on-device. The Qualcomm Hexagon NPU delivers 98% faster performance and 40% improved performance-per-watt for sustained AI inferencing."

The chip is again built on the 4nm process. Thus, it is only Apple that is selling a flagship phone with a 3nm chip in the global market. By 2024, we could see a 2nm chip as well. The commercial availability will be a question for the future.
