Apple iPhone X May Be Discontinued in Q2 2018 Due to Poor Sales: Analyst

The Apple iPhone X will go to the end of life around mid-2018 says KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The analyst predicts that Apple will stop producing the iPhone X in Q2 2018, thanks to the not-so-strong sales. He predicts that the Cupertino giant will manage to ship 18 million iPhone X units this quarter, but sadly, it' short of the company's expected 20-30 million sales. As per the analyst, Apple will manage to ship 62 million units of iPhone X in total, which is comparatively down from the estimated sales of 80 million.

Breaking down, as per the KGI report, Apple will ship around 18 million iPhone X units in Q1 2018, followed by a mere 13 million units in Q2 2018. The poor sales will ultimately lead Apple to stop producing the iPhone X. It is also to be noted that Apple's earlier smartphones such as the iPhone 7 and iPhone 6s are selling better the iPhone X, and that could be due to the reduction in cost.

But still, Apple killing a much-anticipated smartphone like iPhone X is something very hard to hear. But KGI says that Apple will hit back in 2018 with two new bigger display iPhones. The successor to the iPhone X will have a 6.1-inch LCD display, while the iPhone X Plus will arrive with a 6.5-inch OLED display.

The report also added that Apple would surely go with bigger screen iPhones in 2018 because of the failure of iPhone X. In China, the iPhone X did not meet the exact demand as Apple predicted because they did not like the notch taking up space at the top. Of course, Apple will use the same notch-design on this year iPhones, but the increase in screen size and compatibility of applications may favour the tech giant.

And here comes an interesting part. KGI claimed that the successor to iPhone X- the 6.1-inch LCD display model will be priced significantly lower around $650-750 range. And the OLED model might still be priced around $999. Nevertheless, if this happens, the 2018 iPhones will give a tough fight to several Android phones out there.

The failure of iPhone X gave a chance to Samsung to strengthen its position in the flagship segment. Apple will be eying for a massive 2018. If rumours are to be believed, Apple will launch an iPhone SE 2 in March 2018.
