Motorola is now a different company altogether- increased product lineup, reduced software support, and fake promises. After Lenovo taking reigns of Motorola, the company has lost the consumer trust, and more recently, the company was in the news for eliminating the Moto G4 lineup from the list of devices receiving the Android Oreo update.
Eventually, Motorola said that the devices will receive the update, not before a petition signed by thousands of Moto G4 users across the world. This explains the entire story of Motorola right now. The company is just focusing on launching new products but is not bothered about timely software updates.
That said, Motorola's premium smartphone of 2017 in India, the Moto Z2 Play is available at a discounted price in India on Flipkart. The device was originally launched in India for Rs. 27,999 and is now available at Rs. 24,999- a Rs. 3,000 discount. But should you purchase it? Absolutely, No.
Before we state our reason, here are the key specifications of the smartphone. The Moto Z2 Play flaunts a 5.5-inch Full HD display and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 SoC, coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The smartphone flaunts metal body and comes in two colour options- Fine Gold, Lunar Gray.
The Z2 Play has a 12MP f/1.7 camera at the back with an LED flash, which is coupled with a 5MP front-facing camera. The device runs Android 7.0 Nougat and has a 3000mAh under-the-hood. The highlight of the Moto Z2 Play is the thickness of 5.9mm and support for Moto Mods.
That said, the first generation Moto Z Play also comes with similar specifications, in fact, it has a bigger battery than the Z2 Play. So, Motorola is asking Rs. 24,999 for the Moto Z2 Play, which is the similar price of the OnePlus 3T right now. The Z2 Play does decent specifications, but it lacks the competitive factor. It has Moto Mods support, but Motorola has priced aggressively in India.
The JBL SoundBoost Mod costs Rs. 6,999, whereas the Hasselblad True Zoom Camera Mod costs Rs. 19,999. Also, Flipkart is selling the much better Samsung Galaxy S7 at Rs. 29,990 in the same sale, which overshadows the Moto Z2 Play by a huge margin.
The Moto Mods does add some usability, but the premium price tag is making its users stay away from them. So, if you're not purchasing the Moto Mod, then you should go for a different smartphone such as the OnePlus 3T or the Samsung Galaxy S7, which offers more value as a smartphone.
Previously, consumers used to get Motorola devices to enjoy the latest software version right after Google devices. But now, Motorola is not even pushing the updates on a timely basis. The company is not even providing monthly security patches, which is underwhelming.
OnePlus is doing a great job in terms of software updates and has already promised to roll out the Android Oreo update to the OnePlus 3T by the end of this year. Also, Samsung is rumoured to be working the Android Oreo update for the Galaxy S7.
That being said and done, the Moto Z2 Play at Rs. 24,999 as a smartphone doesn't justify the price tag. However, if you're looking to get Moto Mods, you can purchase it, but just as a smartphone, you should consider the OnePlus 3T or Samsung Galaxy S7 available at similar prices.
