InFocus, the American smartphone maker had been recently awarded with the Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) which gives it the exclusive access to launch smartphones with support for Aadhaar verification via Iris-recognition.
The company stated that it will be launching a slew of devices in the near future with the first smartphone with support for the Aadhaar based authentication being launched in the next 2 to 3 months.
These smartphones will come with IriTech’s iris image quality assessment along with on-board K7 image generation algorithm which will “provide good quality images and avoid false positives while maximising true positive identification rates.”
A smartphone integrated with IriTech’s algorithm will be able to capture an image and generate its K7 images under two seconds. Moreover, they will be able to capture iris images under various lighting conditions including under direct sunlight.

By now you must have been wondering what is all the fuss about Aadhaar-enabled smartphones and how will they benefit normal people.
Well, the idea is simple — to eliminate usage of multiple dedicated devices for biometric identification and introduce a single multipurpose device to serve the same purpose. And also to accelerate JAM (Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile).

These smartphones, once integrated with IriTech’s advanced algorithm, can be used to authenticate any services that involves your Aadhaar card. Speaking of which, almost all the government services need Aadhaar verification these days including:
- Opening new bank accounts with eKYC
- Banking
- Electronic Public Distribution System (E-PDS)
- Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) payments
- Issuing a passport
- Taxation
- Healthcare
- Education
- Cashless micro ATM for merchant payments (upcoming)
As far as the security is concerned, the biometric data from the InFocus smartphone will be encrypted at a chip level by UIDAI key thereby making it impossible for anyone else to get hold of Aadhaar details.
Commenting on the same, InFocus India Head, Sachin Thapar said “While the M425 will be made available in the next 2-3 months, we will bring more devices with this technology as we have received the certification.” To recall, the InFocus Bingo (M425) smartphone was launched earlier this year with a price tag of Rs. 5,749.
However, with the iris scanner on board, it is expected to be launched at Rs. 12,000.
