Reliance Jio which launched its 4G services for its employees at an event held in Mumbai yesterday has claimed that its fiber to the home (FTTH) offering will deliver peak connection speeds up to as high as 1 Gbps. At the event which was attended by over 35,000 people including Jio employees and their families, Jio showcased some of its devices and digital content offerings which will be made available to consumers by first or second quarter of 2016.
Apart from the ultra high speed FTTH connection, Jio also showcased its plug and play home wi-fi router. This router connects to Jio 4G LTE network and converts it to wi-fi network usable by all devices of the consumer. Being plug and play, the device is highly easy to use and the subscriber has the mobility of plugging it into any power socket in any corner of the house.
Jio presented a comparison between the speed of its network and that of other operators' high speed data networks. According to the comparison Jio network provides 4 times faster video streaming than incumbent operators' 4G networks. Video calling on Jio network is 5 times faster than incumbents' high speed data networks.
Where other operators' high speed data networks take 120 secs for downloading a 30 MB file, Jio network does the same in 12 secs which is 10 times faster than the incumbents' networks. The upload of a 20 MB file on incumbents' network takes 120 secs while the same on Jio network takes 21 secs which means Jio has 6 times faster upload speeds.
Mukesh Ambani also officially launched the LYF brand phones which are Jio's own in house smartphone brand which are compatible with 4G LTE and support voice over LTE (VoLTE) and voice over wi-fi (VoWi-Fi). The phones are are divided into 4 series, each named after the 4 elements of the universe, Earth, Water, Fire and Wind series. The phones will be available at Reliance Digital xpress and xpress mini stores over the next couple of weeks. Jio is giving its employees a 50% discount on the purchase price of these phones, along with 75GB 4G data and 75 hours of voice calling per month till commercial launch.
