Low-cost calling app Ringo, which introduced local calling in India last week, said that its domestic calling service has been blocked by Indian telecom operators.

The domestic calling service, which provides very low-cost local calling at 19 paise a minute to anyone across India including those who do not use the app, has been put on halt by the company for all until it resolves the issue.

“We will be pausing Ringo Domestic calling rollout until such time that we resolve this issue,” Bhavin Turakhia, CEO of Ringo said in a post on the company’s website.

“The service is a fully legal, compliant service, and follows all aspects of the DoT and TRAI regulations. However in spite of being fully compliant with the law, the service allegedly seems to have been blocked as of half an hour ago (30th November) without any notice to our service providers. This is the information we have just received from our service provider,” Turakhia added.

The company said that it will continue to persevere in providing innovative voice solutions, and intend to take relevant remedial action, but do not have an ETA on the same.

“As it stands, until we manage to get an intervention from relevant regulatory authorities to unblock our service, none of our domestic calls are going through,” Turakhia said.

In the interim, the company will immediately refund any unutilized amounts customers paid so far for the service. The application however still can be used for making high quality international calls.
