Taking a cue from other smartphone brands, Karbonn is the latest company to jump into ‘Make in India’ bandwagon. The company at the launch of its Titanium Mach Five smartphone revealed its plan to open up a manufacturing unit in Hyderabad.
The company restated to invest around Rs. 800 crores over a period of next three years in India. Shashin Devsare, Executive Director, Karbonn, said, “As part of the investment initiative, we have tied up with Water World to set up a facility in Noida that will be capable of producing 1.5 million units." Devsare also revealed that Karbonn might also set up a facility in Noida by the end of 2015, although he did not give any set timeline for the set up.
Karbonn also has another facility in Hyderabad, talking about which, Devsare said, “We are also looking at setting up a handset facility in Hyderabad worth Rs. 450 crores.” As of now, Karbonn is focusing more on the rural and semi-urban markets, the company even revealed its plan to overcome language barriers through its upcoming devices. At the launch, Devsare also confirmed that Karbonn is open to other manufacturers coming up and using its facility for their processes.
The company is under agreement with Panasonic, which is also setting up its unit in India. Panasonic earlier stated that Karbonn might use its facility to manufacture handsets.
