According to a market researcher TrendForce, over 267 million smartphones were shipped worldwide during Q1, 2014. As per the research firm, it was a 1.13% rise when compared to the same quarter last year. Smartphones are expected to reach 6.7% more shipments in the current quarter (Q2, 2014) when compared to Q1, 2014.
Samsung, with a 30% market share maintained its podium position, thanks to sales of its low and mid-range smartphones like Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 and Samsung Galaxy Grand 2. Apple experienced a bit of a decline in shipments but still managed to retain the title of 2nd largest smartphone brand. However, iPhone sales are expected to increase in second half of 2014 after the possible launch of iPhone 6 with a larger 4.7 inch screen size.
Chinese smartphone brands such as Huawei, Lenovo and Xiaomi have experienced more than 20% growth rate which is much higher than what analysts have expected.
