OnePlus to Replace Dash Charge With Warp Charge After Failed Trademark Attempt

OnePlus, during the launch of its latest flagship phone, the OnePlus 6 was dodging the use of the phrase ‘Dash Charge’. It was later reported that OnePlus had run into legal trouble regarding the usage of the phrase since the company couldn’t obtain a trademark of ‘Dash Charge’ in the EU, but now it seems that the Chinese OEM has finally found a way around the problem. The OnePlus 6 resorted to many other options for explaining the technology to its buyers. It used the phrase charging rapidly to replace the previous ‘Dash Charge’ word, and in some stores, the cables were called ‘fast charging cables’.

The issue had come up because OnePlus was unable to file a trademark for the phrase given its resemblance to Bragi’s “The Dash Pro” and Amazon’s “Dash Replenishment”. Now to clear the confusion once and for all, OnePlus has gone for an alternative trademark and has now decided on ‘Warp Charge’ as its new tagline for the fast charging technology which its phones support.

The application for the trademark of ‘Warp Charge’ has already been filed by OnePlus at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) under the Nice Class 9 – a classification method used to outline about what kind of products or services the company intends to cover under the trademark. The definition of Nice Class 9 highlights that it covers products like “apparatus, instruments and cables for electricity.” OnePlus’s trademark filing describes its products under “Data cables; power adapters; cell phone battery chargers; electrical adapters; batteries, electric; chargers for electric batteries; wireless chargers”.

What’s noteworthy here is the fact that although OnePlus hasn’t introduced a wireless charger in the market as of yet, this trademark highlights that the Chinese company might have plans of doing so in the future. Also, it is notable that right now the trademark application for ‘Warp Charge’ remains “under examination” by the authorities and OnePlus will only be able to use the phrase officially when it obtains the regulatory approval.
