Android and iOS to Soon Receive Gmail Mentions Feature After Desktop

After the New Gmail revamp, it seems that Google is on an update marathon for its favourite email service. With this new revelation, it has come up that Gmail is going to roll out a @mention feature for desktop, the update is slowly expected to follow up on the mobile application too. Like existing applications similar to Slack and Twitter, the new update will allow the email writers to mention anyone in their contact list using the “@” character, and then the recipients will be able to click on the mentioned name which will enable them to send another mail to them directly.

The feature was first discovered by Addictive Tips which revealed that Gmail would pop-open a drop-down list when users type the mention button “@” from where they will be able to choose which contacts they want to mention. The mentioned person is automatically added to the ‘Mail to:’ list while composing the mail, further recipients will see this mentioned name as a clickable link which will redirect them to the compose window with the mentioned person’s email ID marked as the recipient.

Currently, this mention feature is only available for the Web client and is not yet rolled out to the Android and iOS. However, Google has put out the news that the feature will be soon extended to both the mobile platforms. Also, to make the Gmail experience smoother users will be able to see a small “+” icon on the side of the mention when they receive the email which will allow them to directly add the email to their contact list. Apparently, this new feature will not work with third-party clients like Thunderbird and Outlook.
