Motorola is now rolling out Android 8.0 Oreo update to the Moto X4 standard variant, which was released in India a couple of months back. Recently, the Lenovo-owned company rolled out the Oreo update to Moto X4 Android One Edition. The update is rolling out to standard Moto X4 users across the world including India, but in a phased manner, meaning you may receive it a bit later. The weighs in at around 1138MB and takes the build number to OPW27.2.
Thankfully, Motorola has added the December 2017 security patches in this update. After the update, you can see all the Android Oreo features such as Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode, revamped Settings app and quick settings menu, smart text, auto-fill feature, and notification dots.
Here's the official changelog of the update from Motorola
- Android 8.0 Oreo: Many enhancements including new multitasking features, security capabilities, improved notifications and performance.
- Android security: Includes the updates of Android security patches until December 1st, 2017.
- Stability improvements: Includes changes that fix bugs and improve the stability of your phone.
It's good to see Motorola updating the latest product to the latest Android version at such a quick time. However, it's understandable that there will be only a few changes to the software of the regular Moto X4 and Android One Moto X4, which is the reason why Motorola pushed the update this faster. Either way, a huge shout out to Motorola for releasing the update before the end of 2017, much ahead of other smartphone brands.
Having said that, Motorola has been a different company altogether in the last two years, especially after Lenovo taking over the reigns, the company stopped seeding regular software updates to its smartphones, which has become a worry to consumers. The Moto G5 Plus recently received November 2017 security update, but before that, the smartphone was running March 2017 security patch update.
The company is promised to roll out the Android Oreo update to many other smartphones including the Moto G5S Plus, Moto Z2 Play, Moto G5S, Moto G5, Moto G5 Plus, Moto E4 Plus, but there's no update at the moment on when it's planning to release. Let's hope that all these Motorola devices will receive Android Oreo update in early 2018.
Coming back to the Moto X4 update, it's rolling out in phases and many users across India have already received it. Make sure to check the update manually by heading over to the About Phone section in the Settings app.
