Xiaomi Mi Max’s Successor in the Making: Here’s Everything We Know So Far

If big screen smartphones are your thing, Xiaomi’s Mi Max is arguably one of the best smartphones that your money can buy right now. Of course, only after Xiaomi’s Mi Mix if you ever get lucky. The Mi Max, which was launched last year, offered decent specs for the asking price and was mainly targeted at a niche market. And, if the latest rumours are anything to go by, the company is already preparing a successor to it. Dubbed the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 (naturally), the smartphone is expected to be launched sometime in May this year.

As per the latest rumour spotted on Weibo (a Chinese equivalent of Twitter), Mi Max 2 will retain the same 6.44-inch display as seen on its predecessor. We suspect that there may not be a near bezel-less display which is possibly going to be the case with most of the big screen smartphones this year.

The Mi Max 2 is also rumoured to feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset (yet-to-be-unveiled) which will be based on Samsung’s 14nm FinFET process. The device is said to pack 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. Currently, it’s not clear if the storage will be expendable, though. A 5,000mAh battery is believed to provide the fuel for the entire package. The smartphone is also believed to offer support for Qualcomm’s Quick Charge technology for faster-charging speeds.

Rest of the details including the connectivity options and the Android OS are still under the wraps. However, considering that the company is already testing the Nougat update for its recently launched smartphone — the Redmi Note 4, assuming that the Mi Max 2 will run Android 7.0 Nougat-based MIUI 9 out-of-the-box seems to be a safe bet.
