Microsoft is working tirelessly to make Windows Phone a major OS in the world of smartphones but the juggernauts named Android and iOS have their roots set so deep, that it is a bit difficult to go up against them. But Microsoft is launching new budget smartphones constantly which are helping it expand its reach in the ecosystem of smartphones.
The market share of the platform has been increasing constantly and Windows 10 Mobile is expected to make things better. As per the latest report from IDC, Android will have a 79.4% share of the smartphone market (globally) by end of the current year. A total of 1.15 billion handsets would have been shipped by the year end which run on Android. This would result in a growth of 8.5% over the previous year.
237 million iPhones will be shipped in the same period which will result in Apple occupying a 16.4% share of the smartphone market. It is indicative of a 23% growth in terms of YoY growth. But the dark horse has been Windows Phone which has been growing at quite a brisk pace. Microsoft will end up shipping 46.8 million smartphones by the end of this year which would represent a 3.2% market share.
But the impressive part about it is that it represents a growth rate of 34.1%. The analysis by IDC has further revealed that by 2019, Android will occupy a 79% share with the total number of shipments being 1.5 billion. It would have given it a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 7.5% by then. iOS would have occupied 14.2% of the market post shipping 274.5 million handsets. This would showcase a CAGR of 7.3% for iOS.
But the Windows Phone is expected to make the biggest leap. Its share will increase to 5.4% which will represent the total number of shipments being 103.5 million and the CAGR being 24.3%. These figures are estimates based upon the market trends and the future is unpredicatable. Microsoft is working on making these predictions a reality and we can expect a lot more launches from the brand in future to help it gain strong hold over the market.
