State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced the nationwide rollout of Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi), also known as Wi-Fi Calling, making the service available to customers across all telecom circles in the country.
Pan-India VoWiFi rollout
The new service allows BSNL users to make and receive voice calls and text messages over a Wi-Fi network, offering clear and reliable connectivity in areas with weak or no mobile signal, such as homes, offices, basements, and remote locations. Calls are made using the customer’s existing mobile number and handset dialer, without the need for any third-party applications.
VoWiFi is an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)-based service that supports seamless handover between Wi-Fi and mobile networks, ensuring uninterrupted communication. The facility is particularly beneficial for users in rural and remote areas where mobile coverage may be limited, provided a stable Wi-Fi connection—such as BSNL Bharat Fiber or any other broadband service—is available.
Free service for users
BSNL said the service is being offered free of cost, with no additional charges for Wi-Fi-based calls, and is expected to help reduce network congestion while enhancing call quality.
"The service is particularly beneficial in rural and remote areas where mobile coverage may be limited, provided a stable Wi-Fi connection is available, including BSNL Bharat Fiber or other broadband services. VoWiFi also helps reduce network congestion and is offered free of cost, with no additional charges for Wi-Fi calls," the Ministry of Communications said on Thursday, January 1, 2026.
The launch of VoWiFi marks a significant milestone in BSNL’s ongoing network modernisation programme and underscores its commitment to improving connectivity, especially in underserved regions of the country.
Supported on modern smartphones
The service is supported on most modern smartphones, and customers can activate it by enabling the Wi-Fi Calling option in their device settings. For device compatibility and further assistance, customers may visit the nearest BSNL customer service centre or contact the BSNL helpline at 1800-1503.
