Jio envisioned Artificial Intelligence (AI) services expanding to all sectors with a range of use cases across education, healthcare, and retail, with cloud infrastructure playing a key role. A general framework prioritising cloud-driven AI and local data storage will be essential to fully harness the potential of AI in India, a senior Reliance Jio official said while speaking on the sidelines of the India Mobile Congress 2024, according to a Business Standard report.

AI will Change Everything
“AI will change everything, not just telecom. For that AI cloud is needed as a framework. If you do not have access to every premise, do not have storage, do not have modern features running on AI-cloud, India will remain behind,” the report quoted the official as saying.
Jio’s in-house AI modelling tools are reportedly designed to connect various devices to the cloud. According to the official, Jio already holds proprietary technology to connect these devices, the report noted.
AI Processing in the Cloud
Jio envisions a scenario in which customer-premises equipment is reduced in capacity, cutting costs and processing more than half of the data in the cloud.
“Most in-hand or at-home devices are expensive. The processing power of such devices should be reduced. Instead, data-processing capabilities should be pushed to cloud, with the use of Edge data centres, which provide low-latency connectivity and the network should be made intelligent,” the report quoted the Jio official as saying.
Developed In-House AI Modelling Tools
Jio’s internally developed AI modelling tools aim to connect various devices via the cloud, reducing the need for costly customer-premises equipment. By shifting data processing to the cloud, the company hopes to lower device costs while enhancing functionality. The official highlighted JioBharat phones as an example, demonstrating how cloud connectivity allows these low-cost devices to stream 750 TV channels despite limited memory and processing power.
