Apple Plans to Make Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Chips for iPhones: Report

apple plans to make wifi and bluetooth

Apple is reportedly working on developing its own Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip. This chip will be used starting next year with the new iPhones and some Smart Home products. Apple is already expected to increase its focus on the smart home segment, and this chip would reduce its dependence on Broadcom. The current Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips are provided to Apple by Broadcom. Previously, Apple also hired Intel’s modem division to make its own 5G modem, but that did not work out as Apple expected.

However, the talks around Apple’s own 5G modem have surfaced back. Ming-Chi-Kuo, a popular Apple analyst has said that in 2025, we could see two new iPhones with Apple’s 5G modem. This will be interesting. Apple is expected to bring a new iPhone 17 Air (slim model), and iPhone SE 4, apart from the iPhone 17 series in 2025.

Now this development about the Cupertino tech giant using its own Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips for iPhones and smart home products certainly adds fuel to the fire. Apple has always been about more control over the design, production, and selling of its products. This will take the company a notch closer to doing everything itself for the products.

Apple’s 5G modem will be competing against many other established products from Qualcomm, MediaTek and more. The Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chip is codenamed Proxima, according to a Bloomberg report. It will be built by the TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company). Apple had earlier this year said that it plans to make its own server chips for powering the on-device AI (artificial intelligence) features.
