Google to Follow HTC Footsteps by Adding Squeezable Frame to the Pixel XL 2 Lineup: Report

Google will unveil the Pixel 2 lineup sometime later this year, however, rumours are already floating on the web and have already revealed a few of Google plans for the lineup. With today's leak, we've got an actual idea on how the device will look like.

Folks at Android Police have leaked an image of Google Taimen- the bigger one in the Pixel 2 lineup. At the moment, it's unclear whether this device would be called as Pixel XL 2 or will Google call it differently. Nevertheless, we'll call it as Pixel XL 2 itself for now because smartphone vendors finalise a device name just before the release.

So, let's take a look at what the image shows. The Google Taimen will have a 6-inch 18:9 display, as pointed out by the previous rumour and it will be built by LG, which was tipped earlier as well. To recall, a report surfaced online revealed that HTC will manufacture one smartphone in the Pixel 2 series, while the other one would be developed by South Korean giant LG.

It was also said that the Pixel 2 series would have the same glass and metal construction at the back, but the fingerprint scanner will now come out of glass body. And this image shows the same. But the rear camera module is much larger than what we have expected, and it's a single camera setup. Sadly, Google is not yet looking at the dual camera smartphone.

Overall, from the back, the device looks similar to the first generation Pixel smartphones. From the front though, the device is a major departure from the Pixel lineup. The Google Taimen will have a 6-inch display, while the Google walleye will come with a 5-inch display. Both the displays have an aspect ratio of 18:9, meaning they will feature slimmer bezels, same as the Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6.

And yes, Google will use OLED displays in the upcoming Pixel smartphones. What's interesting from this leak is that Google is adding a Squeezable frame at the sides, same as the HTC U11. With this frame, you can squeeze the smartphone to open Google Assistant. This is what the leak says, but expect Google to allow customising the squeezable frame functionality.

That being said, if you're looking for the specifications of the phone- it will be powered by the Snapdragon 835 chip (possibly Snapdragon 836 as well if it releases by then), 4GB of RAM, 12MP rear camera, IP68 certification, wireless charging, 3500mAh battery, and Android O.

The smaller Pixel 2 will have a 5-inch 18:9 display and a smaller battery. Google is again looking to differentiate both the phones by just reducing the screen size and battery capacity.

The pricing and release date of the phones are still a mystery. Also, the publication rated this leak as 8 out of 10, so there' still a possibility that there would be some changes in the final design.
